The items I recommend are the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Mat, Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Pure Castile Liquid Soap, and Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner.
Disclaimer: Please forgive the dirty cleaning mat, my liquid foundation seems to have stained the plastic.

The mat features 7 textures to wash eye and face brushes.
It includes suction cups on the back so that it will stick to your bathroom sink for secure placement.
I truly can't imagine cleaning my brushes without the Sigma Brush Cleaning Mat anymore! It makes things so much quicker and really aids in deep cleaning my kabuki brushes. You can purchase it from the Sigma website and don't forget to use code SIGMA2017 for 10% off your entire order!
I've used face cleansers, clarfiying shampoos, and various brush cleansers to wash my makeup brushes. These always worked ok. I had heard that Dr. Bronner's Liquid Soap was a good option to wash makeup brushes so I recently purchased a large bottle. I can honestly say that this is the best makeup brush cleanser I've used! It's only about $10 for a large 16oz bottle and you don't need a lot to get your makeup brushes clean. I just squeeze a small amount over a few brushes and then swirl them on the matt while adding water. You can purchase Dr. Bronner's at Target or Amazon. I've only tried the Peppermint soap so I can't speak for the cleaning efficacy of the others.
The most difficult brushes for me to clean are my favorite Sigma kabuki brushes because I use them to apply liquid foundation. It feels almost impossible to clean the foundation out of kabuki brushes. I've discovered that Cinema Secrets Makeup Brush Cleaner is the best makeup brush cleaner to really deep clean makeup brushes. It really just kind of sucks makeup right off the brush, even liquid foundation! Unfortunately it's very expensive, an 8oz bottle is $24. I purchased the small 2oz spray bottle and I use it only for my kabuki brushes and it's lasted me a good amount of time. You can purchase Cinema Secrets at Sephora or Amazon.
