Frugal Friday - Maybelline Falsies Mascara - Review

Welcome to Frugal Friday!  Today I'm discussing the Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Mascara.  This mascara is super affordable at $6.99 depending on the store.

This mascara contains a natural bristle wand that is slightly curved to help lift and separate lashes.  Maybelline says that the brush and formula combined will "build 8x more volume without clumping to complete the false lash look".

I've been using this mascara for the past month in the shade Blackest Black.  I couldn't find a waterproof version at any of my stores or I would have purchased that instead.  For a daytime look, I apply 1 or 2 coats depending on how the first coat went on.

Maybelline Falsies Mascara 1 coat

Two coats of this mascara is enough for me for daytime.  My lashes are plenty dark and voluminous without getting clumpy.

If I were to wear this mascara for an evening out, three coats is definitely necessary.  It does get slightly clumpy and spidery but it's also dark and dramatic so I guess it's a tradeoff.

Maybelline Falsies Mascara 3 coats

Maybelline Volum Express The Falsies is a very good mascara.  It lengthens and barely clumps, even with 3 coats.  That said, this is another drugstore mascara that I will be using for daytime looks.  I have much better, more dramatic mascaras to wear for evening looks.  So far I have not found a drugstore mascara that is good enough for a night look.  I hope to come across one soon in my Frugal Friday research!

Have you tried this mascara?  What do you think?

Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector - Review

The Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector is described as "a creamy powder luminizer that absorbs and reflects light for a superb natural glow."

I actually found this highlighter when I was in Sephora returning one of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders which didn't work out for me.  One of the MUAs at the store directed me to this and I fell in love and I wasn't even looking for a highlighter at the time.

The compact has an interesting spaceship look to me.  The brown outer rim and underside have the same soft rubbery feel as Nars products.

Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector Opal

I'm not sure about the other shades but the shade that I have, Opal is NOT an allover powder, it is far too shimmery.  It's an absolutely stunning highlight for your cheekbones and brow bones, though I mainly use it on my cheekbones.

Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector Opal

Overall I love the Becca Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal!  Used above my Nars blush in Sin, this gives a gorgeous glow to my face.  I will be saving this highlighter to use in the evenings as it's a little too shimmery for daytime use in my opinion.

Have you tried this highlighter?  What do you think?

Welcome to The Beauty Isle!

Blog name change alert!  I did like the name GlossyGlam but I always felt it was just a little too silly for me.  I'd been racking my brain for months trying to think of another blog name that wasn't already taken and finally came up with The Beauty Isle.  It mixes my love of makeup with my love of beaches, tropical vacations, and of course islands.  And who doesn't love a good double entendre!  :)

I wasn't planning to buy the domain name.  However, when I found out it was so cheap I figured it's a lot of work to change my URL anyways, I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone and do it all at once.  This way if I felt like I wanted to lose the ".blogspot" in the future, I wouldn't have to go through another URL change.

I'd like to thank Laurie of Interwebs Chic who helped me out with some questions I had today.  She posts tons of useful blogging info that is easy to follow so I hit her up and she was really helpful.  Thanks Laurie! :)

MAC & Sephora Haul

Happy Monday everyone!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

I recently did some shopping at MAC and had my makeup done at Sephora which I discussed here. I picked up some goodies during both visits.

Ok, in the store both of these foundations looked like perfect matches on me.  I did ask for a slightly darker shade than what I was originally matched with at the MAC counter as I felt that it was a little too light.  That said, how the heck do these look SO different side by side?  This is disturbing to say the least.

MAC Haul
MAC Pro Longwear Foundation
I currently use Estee Lauder Double Wear as my foundation and I do love it but I've been wanting to try some other brands just to see what else is out there since I've been using Double Wear for so long.  I've tried this a few times and I like it so far.

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer
I also am on the hunt for a great concealer which in all my makeup wearing years, I have yet to find.  Not to mention, my concealer needs are changing because now I have to look for ones that don't accentuate my lines.  This concealer is well loved in the beauty blogosphere for it's longevity and the fact that it doesn't settle into lines.  It kind of does settle into my lines actually but I'm going to give it a few more tries to make my final verdict.

MAC Lustre Lipstick in Capricious
This is my first MAC lipstick!  I love the color and the feel.  I'll do a full review soon.

Sephora Haul

Makeup Forever HD Foundation
This is the foundation that the MUA at Sephora recommended for me when I asked for full coverage and long lasting.  So far I like it but I want to wear it a little longer to make a final decision on it.

Nars Creamy Concealer
This is another hugely loved concealer, known for it's consistency and for not settling into lines.  I actually purchased and returned this concealer in another shade late last year because it settled into my lines really badly.  When the MUA suggested it in another shade I thought I'd give it a try.  It's still settling into my lines but maybe I'm just being too picky and this is the best it's going to get?  Ugh.

Nars Blush in Sin
I have one other Nars blush and it's in the popular shade, Orgasm and I love it.  To be honest, blushes don't really excite me at all.  They don't look that much different when on the face in my opinion.  I had heard tons of love for Sin but was never curious about it.  When the MUA applied this to my cheeks, I was obsessed!  It's a gorgeous shimmery plum color.

Do you guys use any of these foundations or concealers?  What are your thoughts and experiences of them?

Frugal Friday - Revlon Color Burst Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain - Review & Lip Swatches

Welcome to another edition of Frugal Friday.  Frugal Friday is a weekly series where I feature an affordable drugstore beauty product.  This week I will be discussing the Revlon Color Burst Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain chubby pencils.

Chubby lip pencils are all the rage right now and almost every single makeup brand has a version of them.  I believe that these Revlon Balm Stains came out in the last 6 months.  Revlon also carries a shiny version of these pencils called Lacquer Balms and a matte version called Matte Balms. I will review those in future posts.

These Balm Stains retail for around $8.99 depending on the store.  I currently own 4 shades, Rendezvous, Honey, Sweetheart, and Crush.  These lippies feel very soft and moisturizing and the color does last quite a long time on my lips, hence their name "Balm Stain".  :)

Rendezvous is a very subtle orange color.  Orange sounds scary but this is soft and pretty. Honey is a nude slightly pink color my lips.  Sweetheart is sort of a neon pink and I love it!  It's totally not a color I normally go for but it's really fun to wear.  Crush is a rasberry color.

Revlon Balm Stain Swatches: Rendezvous, Honey, Sweetheart, Crush
Revlon Balm Stain Rendezvous
Revlon Balm Stain Honey
Revlon Balm Stain Sweetheart
Revlon Balm Stain Crush

One of my favorite things about these lippies is that they have a slight minty taste/smell.  It doesn't last forever though so if that's not your cup of tea, not to worry!  I feel that it's the perfect amount of mint and reminds me of candy canes.

Overall I love the Revlon Color Burst Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains!  If you haven't tried these yet, get out there and get your hands on one or two...or three!  And remember, never ever pay full price for drugstore makeup, there will always be some sort of BOGO sale and coupons to use!

Have you tried these chubby pencils?  Do you love them?

February Ipsy Bag

I always love the middle of every month because that's when I receive my Ipsy Glam Bag!

Ipsy is a monthly beauty subscription service.  For just $10 a month you get 4-6 deluxe sample products and often a couple of full size items all in a cute little makeup bag.

The theme of this month's bag is "The Look of Love" which is fitting for Valentine's month.  This month the makeup bag was plain and pink and I received 5 items.

Skyn Iceland Fresh Start Mask - $39 for a box of 6 masks
This is a mask that "re-texturizes skin to reveal a luminous, youthful translucence for a fresh start." This is  2-step process where you add equal amounts of the clay and the gel on your face and then massage until it creates a warm foam.  You leave this on your skin for 5-10 minutes.  I look forward to trying this.  I've really been into brightening masks lately (currently obsessed with GlamGlow).

I love false lashes so I was excited to get these.  The lashes look very lush and long.  A tiny tube of lash glue is included.

Pop Beauty Plump Pout in Fuchsia Freesia - $16 for full size which is 0.3oz
This is a deluxe sample size at 0.14oz.  The packaging is really nice and the cap is like Nars packaging with the soft rubber feel.  This gloss is a really pigmented bright pink, though a little TOO bright for my taste. Then there's the smell...I'm not sure what other way to explain it except maybe that it smells like oil or gasoline.  The stench is REALLY strong and it's quite possible that I will never use this gloss because of it.

This is a full size item.  Supposedly you don't have to wear an eye shadow primer under this long-wearing cream shadow.  The color is a gorgeous "pink-kissed lilac" (according to 'Tini Beauty). This feels really creamy and I LOVE the color.  I can't wait to try this shadow.  Disclaimer: This is another bad smelling product but it's going on my eyes so hopefully it's far enough from my nose that I won't notice it.  :)
Another full size item.  I love when we receive Zoya polishes in our Ipsy bags!  This is a really pretty pale pink color.  This shade really reminds me of my Essie Fiji polish, it's just an ever so slightly darker pink.

February's Ipsy Bag was a great one!  Ipsy really made up for last month's bag which was in my opinion, pretty darn lame. I'm excited to use every item I received this month except the gloss.  I always recommend Ipsy to any beauty fan, it is in my opinion the most fun monthly subscription service out there in this price range.  Not to mention, this month's bag again far exceeds the $10 I paid for it.  If you'd like to sign up, you may click on Ipsy anywhere in this post and use my referral link.

Did we get any of the same products?  What are you thoughts?  Is your Pop Beauty Gloss as stinky as mine or is mine just rotten?

Lorac Rockin' Red Hot Mini Lip Gloss Collection

Hi beauties!

I don't usually post on Tuesdays but I wanted to get this up today because Hautelook is having this set for $12 which is an amazing deal at 50% off!

I got the Lorac Rockin' Red Hot Mini Lip Gloss Collection at Ulta when I had a Friends & Family coupon which I talked about HERE.

This collection contains 8 mini lip glosses and each one has a bejeweled cap.  They are each about 2 inches tall.

These glosses have antioxidants such as Acai Berry, Pomegranate, Grape Seed and Vitamins A, C & E for hydration and shine.

They are in fact super shiny and the names of each gloss is in the photo below.

Here are swatches of each color in reverse order of the above photo.

When applied to my lips (and not globbed on my arm like in the photo above), these colors are pretty sheer with only a hint of color.  Even the lavender one barely shows any lavender color.  I probably wouldn't bother wearing these on their own as they would be better over some sort of lip color.  The best part, these taste like cupcakes!

This set retails for $24 which is an amazing price in my opinion and as I mentioned above it's half off on Hautelook right now!  Overall, I'm really glad I bought the Lorac Rockin' Red Hot Mini Lip Gloss Collection.  If you were looking at this set around the holidays, you really can't beat $12 for 8 pretty little glosses!!

Do you have this set?  Do you love it as much as I do??

Weekend Update - Blogger Event, Boston Wine Expo, Sephora Makeover

I'm not gonna lie lovely readers, I've had a depressing weekend.  I had a flight scheduled to Miami on Thursday afternoon and Mother Nature was being her bitchy self and caused havoc once again.  The earliest they could get me out was Sunday and I had to be back home on Tuesday so it wasn't worth the trip. Vacation cancelled.  Yes, I'm aware there are much worse things in the world to be sad about but well...I'm sad about this and that's that! :(

Ok back to blogging!  Last week I attended a dinner held for Boston area bloggers organized by the lovely Georgina over at Notes on Lifestyle.  I really can't write about this night any better than my new friend Jodi over at Jodi Bean's Blog.  Please check out her awesome recap of the evening full of details and photos HERE (the table settings were gorgeous!).  I took photos as well but they were not great quality because I only had my iPhone with me.  If you follow me on Instagram (@GlossyGlamblog) I posted a few photos there. This was my second blogger event and it was really such a fun time meeting new people and catching up with friends I made at the previous event.  If you can find a group of local bloggers in your area I highly recommend getting involved.  These events really get me out of my shell and that's always a good thing!

To get me out of my depressive funk this weekend I decided to go get a makeover at Sephora (in ANOTHER snowstorm!!).  When I became a VIB late last year I got a card for a complimentary makeover and to be honest, I never thought I'd bother using it.  I posted a few photos on my Instagram.  I had the sweetest MUA and she did a fantastic job (MUAs at Sephoras are hit or miss in knowledge and attitude my opinion, esp. if you're asking them to color match you).  She used mainly Makeup Forever and Nars products and I loved all of them and bought a few things.  I'll be posting a mini-haul very soon.

One of the reasons for the Miami trip was that my friend's birthday was Sunday.  We needed something fun to do since we weren't in South Beach so we decided to go to the Boston Wine Expo.  Again, I posted a few pics to my Instagram.  Since tickets to the actual Expo were a million dollars (I think >$100) and I don't even like red wine, we opted to attend a more affordable wine "seminar".  It was an hour long and we got to learn about and taste 8 very generous sized glasses of wines.  I even liked some of the reds!   It was really fun and we both got a nice buzz afterwards.  :)  For dinner we went to Melting Pot for cocktails, and a healthy dinner of cheese and chocolate.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  After Mother Nature's shenanigans these past few months and especially in the past week, I'm over her and I'm over winter!!  We need spring ASAP!

The Resolute Beauty Blogger - February Updates

Hi everyone, welcome to the Resolute Beauty Blogger Series!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ILCr_Utoyho/Up6FlXE0W9I/AAAAAAAAMoE/-2sffOYelV0/s1600/RBB.png

Myself and Shalunya from Shalunya & Boyet have created The Resolute Beauty Blogger. The Resolute Beauty Blogger is a year long program designed for you to create, stay focused on and achieve your 2014 beauty and blogging resolutions. Our goal is to make 2014 a year of success and achievements.  Please see the original introductory post for the Resolute Beauty Blogger for full details about this series.

This is our second posting so we will be giving updates on the goals we set for ourselves in January.

1. Increase my Twitter and Bloglovin followers by 20 per month.
February Update: I surpassed this goal.  However, I did have a giveaway in January which definitely gave me a lot more followers than in a normal month.  I increased Twitter followers by 219 and Bloglovin followers by 105 between January and February.

2. Keep track of my blog's monthly stats.
February Update: I kept track of my monthly blog stats using the table that I discussed in my January post.

3.  Participate in 1 tag per month.
February Update: I participated in the "Bloggers Made Me Buy Tag" and the "Beauty Love Affair Tag".

4. Do not do more than 3 hours of blogging relating "stuff" per weeknight.
February Update: I did ok at this goal.  There were definitely some nights that I stayed up until 1am and a few nights I was up until 2am (eeeks!).  I'll try to do better at this and aim for heading to bed by midnight.

5. Come up with a weekly or monthly series for my blog.
February Update: I started "Frugal Fridays".  This is not a novel or clever series but it's been fun for me so far because I get to feature affordable drugstore makeup which I'm just recently getting interested in.

6. Do a tutorial, Face of the Day post, or a "tips" type post once a month.
February Update: I did my first FOTD post earlier this week!  It was intimidating and I'm still iffy about it.  I just knew that I needed to cut back on the eyeball photos and feature my entire face every once in a while!  As for tips, I've been writing a few down but haven't done anything bloggy with them yet.

7. Don't be so self-conscious of posting full face pictures of myself.
February Update: See above.

New Goal added in February:
8. Make my blog look more personal.  Add a pretty background, a cool header,  etc.

The question for this month is:

What tools (apps, programs, items, etc) do you use to stay on track with your resolutions?

I use THIS table to keep up with my monthly stats.  Also, this isn't related to my goals but to keep track of and schedule my posts I use a monthly planner shown below.  Most importantly though, I use a pencil because I always switch around what I want to post when.

It's not too late if you want to join this series!  Please post your resolutions, updates, and answers to our monthly questions on your blog on the 15th of each month. Then come back to one of the host's blogs to add your blog post to the link tool below.

Beauty Love Affair Tag

Welcome to the Beauty Love Affair tag. We know you're not the kind to kiss and tell; but we want to know. We want the juiciest stories about your current love. Tell us about your worst heartbreaks. Give us the juicy details of your steamiest affair. We want to know if it was love it first sight. Tell us who turned out to be a total jerk. Confide in us about your sweetest temptation. Don't worry, this isn't about the men; it's all about your Beauty Love Affair.

The Beauty Love Affair tag was created by Saffron Lallem of Saffy Style, Ashley Maria of Ashley Maria, Love, Life, Beauty and Shalunya of Shalunya & Boyet.  Shalunya is the lovely lady that tagged me so go check out her blog post to see her clever answers.

The Rules:
1 Answer each question with the name of a beauty product and, if you'd like, explain why.
2. Give out more Valentines (tag other bloggers).
3. If you are tagged more than once please feel free to answer the questions again using a different type of product. If you answered the first time with skincare, then answer again with an eye, lip, face, nails, or hair product.

First Love
Oh.. You remember what it was like to fall in love for the first time. Such bliss and excitement! Who was your first love?

My mom's makeup were probably my first loves/experience.  I remember she had cheapo dark red lipsticks.  I even remember the cheap smell, blah!

Puppy Love
Before you knew your real love, there were those childhood crushes that sometimes blossomed into a cute puppy love. Who was yours?

Lip Smackers chapsticks and rollerball gloss.  The glosses were so nasty and goopy but tasted so good!

Love Triangle
Such a predicament. This one is so sweet and demure, but this one is so bold and sexy. Tell us about being torn between two lovers. Who were the players in your love triangle?

Well it's more than a triangle, maybe an octagon?  Is there anything larger?  I currently have 16 full size mascaras in rotation (though several are unopened) and a bunch of sample size ones too.  For some reason mascaras rarely dry out on me and needless to say, I don't pay attention to the rule of throwing them away after 3 months (nonsense if you ask me).

Current Love
Dating? Engaged? Married? Who is your main squeeze? Tell us about the one you can't live without or can't seem to let go of. Who is your current love?

My Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler.  I won't even try another brand because this is just perfection for me.

Secret Crush
Even though you're committed to your current love, looking around and admiring from afar never hurt anyone... Who are you secretly crushing on?

I am crushing on The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer.  I have several other highlights and I'm certain that I won't finish any of them in my entire lifetime so I really can't justify buying another one.  But this one is just so pretty and I love the name!

Mary-Lou Manizer®

Blind Date
Which was The One that was introduced by a friend or mailbox company e.g Ipsy that you love?

I've already talked about derma e Microdermabrasion Scrub a million times on my blog.  I was introduced to it in an Ipsy bag and I've been in love since.  It's the best scrub I've ever tried.

Steamy Affair
Which was The One that you left your steadfast regular for; the sexy, handsome one that caught your eye and had you hooked in a Steamy Affair with?

For all over bronzing, I left Nars Laguna Bronzer for Urban Decay Baked Bronzer.  The UD bronzer just gives a much nicer golden bronzey glow.

Sweet Temptation

Which was The One that has snagged your attention but you are only tempted by, you don't know yet whether you want a Steamy Affair or not with?

I am tempted by the Urban Decay Naked Glosses.  I'm sure they're wonderful but I already have a million glosses that are wonderful also.

Urban Decay - Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss

Love At First Sight
You saw it and immediately you loved it.

When I saw the Urban Decay Vice 2 being reviewed all over the blogosphere I knew I had to have it.  Dramatic jewel toned shadows are my favorite.

Double Date
They came in a box set; two great things for the price of one.

So far I'm loving everything that came in my Too Faced Beauty Blogger Darlings Set.  There is not a dud in this whole set!

Friend Zone
You just knew he was amazing; but he's not all that. Who have you relegated to the friend zone?

Again, my Nars Laguna Bronzer.  It was downgraded from all over bronzer to contour bronzer and now that I've got my Chocolate Soleil Bronzer from Too Faced (from the Beauty Blogger Darlings Kit above) I don't even use it for contouring anymore.  Sorry little buddy!

NARS - Bronzing Powder

Total Loser
You were giddy when he asked you out. You had high hopes for a long relationship. Instead he was a complete dud. Who was your total loser?

I'm one of the only people who will say this, but I just wasn't impressed with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders.  I didn't notice if I was wearing it or not wearing anything at all!

Long Lost Love

You were young and he was among your firsts. You grew, you moved on, you two lost touch with each other. Recently you bumped into each other again and you remembered all the reasons you liked him. Who is your long lost love?

I started using MAC Lipglasses since my early 20s (which was a very long time ago in case you didn't know!).  I often forget about them just because I have SO many other lippies but when I use them again I realize how truly wonderful they still are.

 Tinted Lipglass

Major Lust

You haven't yet met. You're just loving him from afar because you feel like he's out of your league. Who is your major lust?

There's tons of super expensive beauty products that I'm lusting after.  There's two though that I've been thinking about for a long time.  One is the Guerlain Meteorites Pearls.  This is another illuminating setting powder.  Though I just fear that they might be a big dud like the Hourglass powders.

Guerlain - Météorites Powder For The Face

The second item is a hair tool.  When I'm going anywhere that matters (i.e. not work) my go to hairstyle is loose curls.  I've always wanted a super expensive curling iron like a T3 just to see how much better can the curls really get.

T3 - BodyWaver 1.75

I tag all my readers who want to do this.  It took me a while but I had so much fun thinking back and coming up with all my answers.  Thank you to the ladies who created this very clever tag!

Face of the Day - Featuring the Urban Decay Vice 2 Palette

Welcome to my very first Face of the Day post!  This took me a while to work up the courage to do and I'm still not 100% confident about it.

This past weekend my sister held an annual fundraiser party to benefit a dental clinic in Haiti.  This is my makeup look for the party.

For this look I went for a purple smoky eye using only the Urban Decay Vice 2 Palette.  By the way, it looks like this palette is still available on the Urban Decay website and they are currently having a 20% off sale!

Face
Primer: Benefit Porefessional
Foundation: MAC Prolongwear applied with a Beauty Blender
Concealer: MAC Prep + Prime in Light Boost (I only use this as a concealer for a night out, not during the day)
Setting Powder: Light dusting of Estee Lauder Double Wear Powder
Contour: Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer in the hollows of my cheeks
Blush: Nars Orgasm
Lips: Urban Decay 24/7 lip liner and Revolution Lipstick, both in Manic

Eyes
Primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion and Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze on entire lid.

Shadows
Dope on lid to brow bone
Rewind mixed with a little bit of Ambush in the crease
Betrayal all over the lid
VooDoo in the outer "V" area of my lid and lining of the lower lid
I sprayed a shadow brush with Urban Decay's De Slick setting spray and picked up Shellshock and applied it from the middle of my lid towards my nose, focusing mostly in the inner lid area.  I then blended everything with a clean large shadow brush.  Then I went back over my lid with a little more Betrayal, Voodoo, and Shellshock to intensify the colors.  I lined my upper and lower lids with a black Be a Bombshell felt tip liquid liner.  I lined my waterline with Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero.  I used a bit of silver liner in the inner corner of my eyes to brighten them up a little more.
Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex - 2 coats.

After a million selfies, this was the "best" one.  Ugh!
The colors look a bit washed out in this photo.  In person they were really vibrant.

I used Moroccanoil in my hair while it was still damp and allowed it to air dry.  I then curled it with a 1 inch curling iron and applied tons of Frizz-ease hairspray (my HG hairspray).

Hope you enjoyed my first face of the day post.  Have a wonderful week everyone!
