New Year's Thoughts

Happy New Year everyone!!

Since it's a brand new year and I recently had my 3 month blog anniversary I thought I'd write a post with my ramblings/advice/thoughts on blogging and questions I still have.  So here we go!

1. Blogging is 100000x more work than I ever thought.

2. Copying/pasting stock photos off other websites is frowned upon (I did not know this at all when I first started).  Taking and editing your own photos takes TONS of time (for me anyways).

3. "They" say to not compare your stats and success to other bloggers but it's REALLY hard not to no matter how hard I try.  It's also hard to not become discouraged.

4. Most beauty bloggers are very young.  At the beginning of my blogging journey I was self-conscious abut being "older", thankfully I've gotten over that.  Not sure how, I just don't care anymore.

5. ANY new beauty purchase is a possible blog post.

6. Beauty blogging has pretty much quadrupled my makeup obsession and spending and I love it! :)

7. Think long and hard about your blog name and when you think you've decided on one, think longer and harder!  I do like my blog name but now I'm feeling it's a little silly.  If I want to change it though, I know I need to do it sooner rather than later and I just can't think of another one I love right now.

8. Finishing a post that you feel people will like and with decent photos is an amazing feeling.

9. My first comment from a stranger (not a real life friend) was the best feeling ever!

10. Not only are Twitter chats really fun, I've found that they are the #1 way to get more readers and followers.

11. I suck at winning contests.  :)

12. I'm curious if my obsession with my blog will ever lessen.  Right now I do blogging related things while I'm at work and well into the night.  Sometimes I'm up until 2 or 3am reading other beauty/fashion blogs, blogging advice blogs, or watching Youtube videos.  I need to stop this, I can't stay up so late on nights that I have to wake up early to go to work the next morning!  Spoiler alert: this is going to be one of my 2014 resolutions.

Questions:
1. When you talk about how many followers your blog has, are you referring to your Bloglovin account followers?  Google+ followers?  Something else?

2. Besides your URL looking more professional, I'm still not understanding the point of buying your own domain name.

3. I've read that Wordpress has more plugins, besides that, why do so many people move from Blogger to Wordpress?  Are the plugins really that great?

Well I guess that's all for now.  Again, I hope everyone has a fabulous 2014!!

I would get in a lot of trouble if my boss gound out lol its a great feeling when you stary having people comment on your posts! I thoughy it was never going to happen for me! And using website pics....I didn't know it was frowned upon...oops...its hard working full time and keeping up with a blog! 1. Hi Tanya, thanks for visiting!
Our blogs are about the same "age" ha!
The photos part of all this is the most time consuming part for me b/c I am SOOO not a photographer or creative in any way to do nice set-ups for the photos. I'm sure we'll both get better as we keep blogging!
Happy new year and good luck with your blog!

  2. I really enjoyed reading this El, I agree with you on a lot of these points. I had no idea blogging would be so time consuming, but so much fun! My passion for makeup has also quadrupled!!

I used to count my GFC followers, but I no longer use GFC, since I heard they will eventually get rid of it.

    Happy new year El!

    1. Yeah, I don't think that GFC really matters anymore. I'd say that Google+ and Bloglovin are the most important. Thanks for visiting!

  3. I have to agree on almost all of the points :) I think it's very funny when people think how much money you can get out of blogging and how many products you get for free, but the truth is you spend a lot more money than you would normally do :)

    1. Ha, money for blogging? I know that happens but I don't see that ever happening for me lol! MAYBE some freebies here and there but nothing more than that. I checked out your blog and I like it. Now following and thanks for visiting mine! :)

  5. Hi!! I'm a new reader! Here are some random thoughts LOL

I've been blogging for about a year now and I am still very obsessed with it!! I get discouraged, too, when I look at Google Analytics and only 60 or so people visited for the month, when Blogger says my page views are much much higher (like 6,000!).

I love the name of your blog! :)

I usually look at how many FB fans I have as my "followers" since that is the social media platform I use most often. This year, I think I will try and expand my horizons a little. It was a lightbulb moment for me to realize that others may want emails or tweets, etc...even though I hate them.

I bought my domain name so I would feel more ownership of my blog name. I also wanted it to look more professional and make it easier for people to remember.

I have no idea about Wordpress. I'm interested to read answers to this.

I love your blog! I think you have started off really great!! :)

    1. Also, I don't know your age, but you don't look like an "older" blogger! haha But I'm glad there is a niche for that. I am in my 30s and just got back into beauty in the past year. My hubby just shakes his head when I buy new stuff. I am an Ipsy member, too. Also, if you don't know about Influenster, check that out. I've been sent many many free products (a lot of makeup, too) to test out and give my opinions on!

    2. Thanks for replying to my "thoughts"! OMG, yes it's so annoying that my Blogger stats are so much better than my Analytics. But I guess the Analytics are more accurate. Whatever ha!

Yes, I am on Influenster but sadly I haven't received a VoxBox yet and I don't know why b/c my scores are decent I think! It's pretty annoying.

Thanks so much for the compliments! I love your blog too and thanks for visiting!
