Target Haul and Maybelline Reviews

Last night I needed a few necessities so I stopped into my local Tar-jay.  You all know the deal, you need one or two things and walk out with 15!

I remembered reading on the excellent Nouveau Cheap blog the other day that there are some super cheap clearance items to be found in the beauty department so I decided to check it out.

I found a few Maybelline items:
Great Lash Limited Edition Mascara - I See Blue & Teal Appeal
24hr Color Tattoo - Edgy Emerald
Color Show Vintage Leather Nail Polish - Red Relic

Some quick reviews:
I had tried Maybelline Great Lash Mascara many many moons ago and didn't like it at all.  BUT, seeing it for only $2.97 last night and in fun colors, I figured why not!  I was thinking it had been so many years since the last time I tried it AND it has such a huge following I had high hopes that perhaps they improved the formula. I was very very wrong.  This stuff is still junk.  Sure it separated my lashes...into clumpy spikes!  Someone on Twitter just told me that you can return cosmetics at Target so I'll def. try.  It's a bit of an effort but I want my $6 back!

Me with I See Blue

Me with Teal Appeal - This didn't even show up on me!

I was excited to find the 24hr Color Tattoo for only $2.24.   I'd read so many great things about it! This was actually quite nice.  The photo below was just a quick couple of swipes with my finger and no primer.  Edgy Emerald is a really pretty color and it stayed vibrant till I took it off about 4 hours later.

I saw a redd-ish nail polish for $1.48 so I didn't even think twice snatching it up!  This nail polish was tricky. I didn't actually read the bottle that closely so I didn't see that it was supposed to have a "vintage leather" look to it.  It's got a gritty texture because it's got some sort of flakes in the formula and it dries very matte.  I tried mine with a shiny top coat and that was a little better.  I guess in the end it DOES have a vintage distressed leather look to it but I'm just not a huge fan.

Overall, I was so excited to get all this stuff so cheap but after playing with everything, it was a bit of a disapointment.

  1. Sometimes I have to refrain from buying stuff despite the price. I totally agree about the mascara. I just am not a fan. I tried it ages ago as well and just did not like how it looked. I have no idea personally why it's still such a hit since there are so many other better drug store mascaras available BUT I understand it has a cult following.
Good to know about the tattoo eyeshadow! I've been wanting to try that after hearing some good reviews and have not bit the bullet to purchase. I'm hoping to snag it sale as well haha.
Thanks for the review! I know what it feels like to walk into Target and walk out with so much more stuff than you intended!

  2. Oh my, yeah the mascara is total garbage! As far as drugstore mascaras go, I don't actually own any. I have heard/read that L'Oreal Voluminous is great so I'm waiting to hear about a sale on that.

Yeah, def. try out the Color Tattoo! I'm going to keep my eyes out for more colors on sale or clearance!

  3. Not surprised a mascara connoisseur like you doesn't like this one! And I mean that in the best possible way, of course! :) I haven't used drug store mascaras in YEARS. One of my favs is Lancôme Hypnôse Drama in black-brown, have you ever tried that one?

    1. I have Lancome Hypnose but just the original formula. You like the "Drama" version? I think they also have a "doll eyes" version. Perhaps I'll keep an eye out for a GWP for Lancome and treat myself to a new one! :)

  4. Thanks for sharing your haul! It's interesting that you had such a bad experience with this mascara... I used to use Great Lash and I don't think it's totally awful! I mean there are definitely better mascaras out there, but I didn't find it *too* clumpy to use. I think it has cult following mostly because its very pigmented and cheap though. :P

    1. That's great that the mascara works for you! I really wish I liked it b/c at $2-ish I would have gone back to Target and bought all the ones left! :)

  5. Before you haul the I See Blue mascara back to the store. Try this my favorite technique with blue mascara. It usually works best on false lashes but you can do it on natural lashes as well. Put on black mascara as normal. and then give it a chance to dry. Once it has dried put the blue mascara on just the very tips of your lashes. Every time I do this people will stare at my eyes to try to figure out what is different. Once they figure it out they are amazed. Give it go! It's a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing!! (◕‿◕✿)

    2. Let me know how it goes! It's my favorite thing to do. And yes, I'm sure my Mother would agree that I am definitely evil. Genius, well, that's questionable. LOL

  6. Thank for the review. I was thinking of getting the great lash mascara. I was see it on sale the other day and thought about getting it. Now I'm not sure if I want to.
I love the 24 hour color tattoos. I use them as a base under my eye shadow. I feel that it makes the eye shadow pop even more.

I started a blog. If you could take a moment and check it out, that would be great!

    1. Thanks for stopping by! That is a good idea about using the color tattoo as a base. Maybe one day if I'm doing a green/blue smoky eye.
